In 1999 Gwynn and I moved to Rio Rico. We didn't
know a lot of people so when Sheila Vasquez asked me to a Rotary
meeting to meet some nice people I said yes. Well as they say
the rest is history.
When I was asked to be president of the club
I was thrilled and when I look back at it, I am glad I didn't
know exactly what I was getting into. From the start I wanted
to work on hunger projects so when I got the chance to lead our
club I asked them to support a few projects I had in mind - and
of course they said yes.
In 2001 our club started the once a month Pasta
Kitchen at the Crossroads Mission. We distributed over 200 pounds
of food each WEEK to the San Francisco Senior Citizen Home in
Nogales Sonora Mexico. And we added an Easter Food Drive to the
list of projects. We also began our support of the County Spelling
Bee and Habitat for Humanity - and a few others.
On September 12th. we all came to our regular
meeting still in shock from the horrific events of the day before.
We had three prayers for peace, one each from the Jewish, Islamic,
and Christian tradition and then went about our usual business
for day. I will not forget that meeting, ever.
I am very very proud to be a Rio Rico Rotarian.
Our club was one of less then a dozen who earned the Rotary Outstanding
Club Citation and only one of five that earned the Presidential
citation in our District. We were number 1 in per capita giving
in the District. Rotary International also honored the Club with
the Significant Achievement Award for our work in feeding the
needy.
