Rotary year 1993-1994 turned out to be a very interesting one in Rio Rico Arizona. As the year began Todd Brown was serving on the Board of Directors as the president elect. He was slated to become the President of the Club for the 1994-1995 Rotary year.

When the sitting president resigned Todd took over the remaining portion of his term in office. Everyone helped out. Members of the Board took turns running Club morning meetings during the spring Produce season. It was a time that the club really showed its stuff.

Major Club Accomplishments:

Club members participated in a "3-way" Club Officer Induction Dinner with the Nogales Rotary Club. Officers and Board Members from both the Nogales and the Rio Rico/Tubac clubs were inducted into office. But the star of the night was George Papachoris, from the Nogales Club, who was inducted as the new District Governor.

George instituted the $2 bill pinned on your label to symbolize how $2 a week would turn a member into a Paul Harris Sustainer.

Our Club hosted "Community Days" the first weekend of October 1993.

Our Club met at Mama Maria's Restaurant, currently La Placita. We passed out Thanksgiving Food Baskets to needy families in the area and had our Christmas Party at the Tubac Country Club. We Sponsored a Kite Festival at Mountain View School in the spring. The Club hosted an exchange student from Argentina.

The biggest community program that the Rotary club started that year was Youth Hoops basketball for area boys and girls. Jim and Felice Botkin were the quiding force in getting the program started. The Youth Hoops program has not only continued in our community, it has grown substantially over the years.

It has given our children an opportunity to participate in team sports and all the good things that go with that. It really paid off when some of the boys who played that first year were instrumental in the Rio Rico High School Boys team winning the state basketball championship in 2004.
